AS PER NEWS REPORT OF THE NEW INDIA EXPRESS DT 1.10.21

Civil and Mech engineering is not preferred in engineering colleges as per survey in Tamil Nadu Colleges. Preference for computer, IT and other branches.
2016 Only about 30% seats filled , in Civil  Engg and about 50% seats only got filled. CE - 10088/28500  ; MECH - 21137/42406

2017 - Almost same trend inspite of reduction of seats in these disciplines CE - 8199/25257  ; 19601/ 38353

2020 - Situation  further grim , only 25% in CE : Only 35% in Mech

In times to come , there will be shortage of engineers in these disciplines.

Yes , demand and supply  law is relevant here also , More the requirements of civil ERs with less availability, the remunerations will be accordingly.

But due to fact that other disciplines like CES , IT are more and early beneficial , even engineers of civil discipline BTech and Mtech switch over to IT after doing small courses. Remunerations are high and gains are early.  Whereas as a Civil /Structural design Er ,  continuous learning with job is needed and  Slow and Steady Pilgrim's path is ahead of them.  Only few are now a days interested  and it is seen that children of civil engineers are not encouraged by their parents to enter this field .

Unless these fields are  provided with subsidised education , incentive oriented , job assurance etc , shortage will be felt in times to come.
