Dear Friends,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you regarding the workshop on seismic isolation of structures at IIT Gandhinagar. Details are as follows.
Date: February 27 - 28
Venue: IIT Gandhinagar
Website: https://events.iitgn.ac.in/2023/seismic_isolation
Poster and brochure of the event are attached with this mail. Downad links can be found at the end of this email or at this link https://www.sefindia.org/?q=node/811
We plan to cover topics related to the state of earthquake engineering in India, some applications of seismic isolation in the country, Indian and American codal provisions relevant to seismic isolation, example designs of a building isolated using sliding and rubber-based bearings, consideration for seismic isolation of nuclear structures, and role of seismic isolation towards zero carbon emission. We also will have a hands-on session for the participants.
Speakers for the event are Professors Andrew S Whittaker (SUNY Buffalo), Sudhir K Jain (VC, BHU), Durgesh C Rai (IIT Kanpur), Manish Kumar (IIT Bombay) and Manish Kumar (IIT Gandhinagar).
Seismic isolation helps protect structures, equipment and other components, thereby enabling an enhancement in the functionality during different levels of earthquake shaking. This is particularly important for structures such as hospitals, data centers, civil and military command centers that are required to function without disruption.
India is gearing to achieve zero carbon emission, and nuclear energy is expected to play a significant role (see announcement by the Government of India, NTPC-NPCIL action plan). Seismic isolation is being considered essential to reduce seismic loads on the components of nuclear reactors, which will allow a reactor to be deployed across geographical regions.
In this workshop, we expect to see the participation of academicians well verse with the development of the design standards in United States and India, potential users of seismic isolation technology in the next 10 years (e.g., engineers from NTPC), and a potential manufacturer of a class of seismic isolation bearings (Harsha Engineers has been collaborating with IIT Gandhinagar as part of the DST project to develop the bearings, and they plan to commercialize it). Therefore, we hope that the workshop will provide an interesting platform for the exchange of ideas.
You are invited to participate in the workshop. Registrations are open until February 15. Feel free to write to me in case there are any questions.
Best regards,
Manish Kumar

IITGN is organising a workshop on ‘Analysis and design of seismically isolated structures’ during February 27-28. It will cover codal provisions, and aspects related to modelling, analysis and design of seismically isolated regular and nuclear structures.
The workshop will see participation of the experts working on seismic isolation technology, potential manufacturers of seismic isolation devices (Harsha Engineers International Ltd.), and potential users of the technology (e.g., NTPC).
The event also brings in a hands-on session supported by Computers & Structures, Inc. (CSI).
Registration for the workshop is open until February 20. More details here. https://tinyurl.com/yc6v7ca2 #SeismicIsolation
