Dear members,

Can someone please elaborate on how to terminate the tension reinforcement coming from the pier inside the RCC piercap. Please suggest out of the following three options with reasoning:

1. Terminate the pier longitudinal bars Ld distance above the junction between pier and piercap.

2. Extend the pier bars upto top of piercap and terminate with a 300mm, 90 degree bend.

3. Extend the pier bars upto top of piercap and provide full lap length with main tie reinforcement of piecap.

3rd option is always preferred so that pier bars are lapped ld to cap main bars,,
Cap bars at top are cantilevered reinf and must run straight on both side cantilevers and pier reinf bars to lap Ld with horz cap bars,,
In case pier bars  are bent only 300 to 600mm ,, better weld withcap bars  OR Provide inverted U bars imbeded Ld into piers after looping cap mainbars,,

The above arrangement will not stress the conc mass at junction of cap and pier,

Hope some Bridge experts may throw better light keeping in view extant practice,
