Dear Frnds
It is every day routine work for a concrete lab and engineers involved to concreting works.
Its a little difference of opinion on compressive strength of a specimen of cubes etc will be at failure of cubes means at reading when it shows any defects like fracture crack splitting crushed down or at last reading at which needle comes back or at which fluctuate, or least of this 2 phenomena.
Generally we look at the dial while suddenly we look at the specimen under test and will confuse where to establish the strength.
Regards

Dear Sir,IS:516(P1/S1)-2021 mentioned the following for testing of concrete cubes...and there is not mentioned as such for observing the failure cracks and observed the load at first crack or etc, it mentioned as directly read the maximum load reach during test. There may be possibility of increments of some load after first crack also........The mentioning of the failure pattern with report if you find unsatisfactory failure. andI hope this will help us for to establish the strength.Regards,HarjiFrom: "sspawar" <forum@sefindia.org>Sent: Wed, 23 Aug 2023 08:23:39To: general@sefindia.orgSubject: [SEFI] When must I take reading in the cube test of concrete, in the first crack or after it fails completely?Dear FrndsIt is every day routine work for a concrete lab and engineers involved to concreting works. Its a little difference of opinion on compressive strength of a specimen of cubes etc will be at failure of cubes means at reading when it shows any defects like fracture crack splitting crushed down or at last reading at which needle comes back or at which fluctuate, or least of this 2 phenomena.Generally we look at the dial while suddenly we look at the specimen under test and will confuse where to establish the strength.Regards

Dear Frnds,
Yes As per IS 516 its very obvious, and this should be followed a black and white decisive point.
IS: 516 • <o></o>
The load shall be applied without shock and increasedcontinuously at a rate of approximately 140 kg/sq.-cm/min until the resistanceof the specimen to the increasing load breaks down and no greater load can besustained. The maximum load applied to the specimen shall then be recorded andthe appearance of the concrete and any unusual features in the type of failureshall be noted.<o></o>
No one should make argue about point of ascertaining the load carrying by the specimen that it is only at complete failure - when needle gets reversed/ or reading gets reversed and fluctuates
Thanks
