Could the column spaced with 18.5 feet (5.64m) can be chosen to have a section of 230 x 230mm for a gplus1 storey residential structure. The  column is in the outer portico structure so no wall load.I calculated axial load with column area method and tried finding out moments in the corner column with moment distribution method.DESIGNED COLUMN UNDER BIAXIAL MOMENT. i got 8 numbers of 12mm (or 4no's of 16 mm) for 230 mm square section for the case.i checked serviceblity chk with 0.2fck Ac.I FOUND EVERYTHING TO BE SAFE. BUT I found in many posts that "230mm x230mm section won't be sufficient for 18 feet column spacing. It will affect stability of the structure.".NOW I want to know
1)   if the section is sufficient for my structure??
2)  Then I also want to know how to check if the section is sufficient based on spacing and number of storeys based on IS CODE??
3) If we can use more than 4 numbers of bars in 230mm section.??

Better provide 230*450 col size and check column for axial load and biaxial moments including slenderness moments on 230 dimension( plus keeping in view min ecc moments if applied moments are less than min ecc mo. ).

Check shall be made for Normal conditions and seismic  conditions  separately (seismic along x case And seismic along Z fir case)

If square column is proposed,, it need to be at least 300*300 but again needs to be checked as stated above ,,

Thank you Providing 300 x 300 mm square section seems to be a better option.
