Dear All,

Shall we design a 16m x 16m hall without any center column support?

Will it be economical to use the larger size column on both ends or a flat slab system?

Kindly guide me on this.
Thanks & Regards,
Ramu.

Dear Er.Ramu

As suggested by many SEFIans, coffered ceiling is the best solution. A few additional points....

In such huge spans, apart from structural design, the checks for deflection and vibration become important.

After deshuttering the floor will undergo significant deflection. If suitable camber is not provided, the thickness of floor finish will be high at the centre. This will lead to a pyramidal load on the flooring. This has to be considered in the design and the reinforcements will increase.

The problem is more severe at the roof level  to ensure proper drainage of rain water.

The camber should account for creep deflection also.

The other problem is vibration. Unless adequate beam depth is provided, if a person jumps at the centre of the hall vibration will be felt. While this may not result in failure, the psychological aspect of the vibration cannot be neglected.

Regarding the geometry of the grid, one may also consider a diagrid system where the beams run at 45 degrees to the sides of the hall. This will be more pleasant to look at.

Why not go for steel structure?

Coffer slab is better if aesthetic importance is a priority else with minimum slab thickness,  slab and Beam at intervals is the economical way of designing the slab of 16 m x 16m.

Dear Sir,The hall can be designed as without intermediate column with grid floor
slab with 2m spacing beam  with nominal slab thickness say 80mm /100 mm.
you can also provide intermediate regular beam  dividing hall  into 3 or 4 span on one side..
But beam is not preferable in a hall. You can go for grid floor.

The Concrete Centre publication "Economic Concrete Frame Elements to Eurocode 2" [ISBN 978-1-9046818-69-4] gives some useful guidance on long span floors.

Please also look at the "Guide to Long-Span Concrete Floors" by the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia [ISBN 1-877023-09-4].

One-way prestressed hollowcore slabs can easily span 16m or more depending upon the superimposed dead and live loads.

Dear Fellows,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Engineer Abdulrasheed A. Taofeeq, and I am writing to inquire about a product called Thermax company they deals with cementitious chemical additives agents for rehabilitation and savergaaging on construction projects
I am particularly interested to get some of their project and my research details it from India MAXTREAT FIBRENET G Product and its features.
Below is the chemical agent am form.
