Dear Comrades,
I'm seeking expert advice on the required number of joints/points for Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT) for a pergola structure with the following specifications:
- 2 levels, each 3.2m high
- Simple design with 200x200 columns, 96x48 secondary beams, and 200x300 primary beams
- Maximum span: 5.0m
- Over 3000 joints with 600mm weld length
The structural engineer has requested DPT for 50% of the joints, which I believe is excessive considering the non-structural nature of the members. I propose 3-5% of critical joints which includes base plate connection and some Column Beam Joints, would be more reasonable.
I'd appreciate expert arguments to support or refute this proposal. |

This is a ludicrous requirement arising out of copy paste culture and should be discussed for a sensible way forward.
