Season's Greetings to all the SEFI members and e-conference participants!
With due respect to all the participants and close followers of the ongoing e-conference, I personally feel that the response for this e-conf is not that encouraging compared to the earlier ones. There are certainly few interesting and relevant questions put in this e-conference by Subhamoy, Jignesh Shah and others. Prof. A R Chandrasekaran has already put very interesting inputs in the forum. May we all expect that those will be reviewed and commented by the distinguished committee members of the upcoming IS 800 and the moderators of this e-conf? Though honestly I don't know, whether this session is specially reserved for the concluding days or not.
Just for the information, some of us have attended the initial knowledge sharing course and program conducted by IE(I), INSDAG and BAI in Mumbai in August on Draft revision of IS 800. But, lot of pertinent questions remained unanswered there because we could not get the opportunity to listen to Prof Kalyanraman, Prof. Satish Kumar and other experts and legendary persons in the field of Steel structure design and construction at that time.
As far as the SEFI members are concerned, there is a passive response again. Does it mean that most of the structural engineers in India are busy with Concrete structures only? As we know, all the developed countries profusely use Steel structures (pre-engineered as well as normal construction) for the industries and commercial plaza and high rise buildings. Compared to that the per capita steel consumption in India is remarkably less. We have plenty of quality steel plants in our country, which are capable to produce huge supply of steel. I feel it will not at all be a bad idea to take initiative from each one of us to capitalize the advantages of steel construction in the industries and for commercial buildings and structures.
In the past, we have seen that practicing engineers and structural engineers found it difficult to comply to various code stipulations during their day-to-day work and had lot of comments later. In that respect, it would be very useful to make all the comments, observations and resolutions now itself before the code is published once for all.
So, please come on. Let's come forward to make the remaining days of the e-conference on IS 800 revisions more meaningful and interesting.
Best regards
Anjan Kumar De L&T-S&L, Baroda
