Dear All,

I think it is important to discuss simple construction site safety aspects
also in our forum -while we struggle with Seismic Safety.

Another labourer dies.("It's only a labourer" -seems to be the
attitude....).Another family will slowly die away.

Who is responsible?

Let us ensure this does not happen in our sites. (Or will our attitude
remain "let us *hope* this does not happen in our sites"?)

Best,

Hari

*Kolkata, November 8:* One labourer was killed and another injured when a
portion of a balcony collapsed in an under-construction state government
building at Baghbazar in North Kolkata this morning. The victim has been
identified as Basdeo Yadav, 30.

The death sparked protests from the local residents who gathered around the
building. They accused the authorities of negligience. There were also
allegations about the use of faulty raw materials for the construction. The
local thana was informed.

[image: Advertisement]  The building is being constructed for housing a
State-run theatre, by the name of Phani Bhusan Vidya Vinod Jatra Mancha. The
incident occurred at around 10 am when the labourers were engaged in their
daily construction work.

According to an eyewitness, the labourers were working when a concrete slab
suddenly fell on them with a loud thud. The other labourers who were working
there rushed to the spot and rescued them. Both the labourers had been
severely injured, and were bleeding profusely. They were rushed to R G Kar
Medical College and Hospital. One of them died on the way while the other is
reported to be in a critical condition.

A police contingent arrived from Shyampukur thana and immediately cordoned
off the area, preventing the situation from spinning out of control. Later,
local MP Sudangshu Sil visited the site. The foundation of the building was
laid by the then chief minister in 1996.

Sil assured the locals that an inquiry would be conducted to find out the
cause of the accident. When asked about the allegation of faulty raw
material being used for construction, he said it would be sent to a
laboratory for testing. The crowd then called off the protest.

Hi Friends,

I feel this needs to be considered as of high importance, The small
explaination about the incident will call for a general feel that, may be

* Either due to short of anchorage lenght of stel bars from slab.

* Or removal of scaffolding before its time of 28 days.

But its difficult to assume that just because of  faulty raw material being
used leads such disaster in short peroud.
