Dear All,
As engineers know that the joints like our body has are very important in structures like BUILDINGS, CONCRETe PAVEMENTS and FLOORING etc. There are various types of joints viz,
1. SEISMIC JOINT.
2.EXPANSION JOINTS.
3 CONSTRUCTION JOINTS.
4.CONTRACTION JOINTS.
I WOULD LIKE THE SENIORS, EXPERIENCED ENGINEERS CAN THROW MORE LIGHT IN DEPTH ABOUT:
1. USE OF THE THEM.
2. WHERE TO USE
3. WHEN TO USE.
4. WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS THAT CAN BE USED.
5. EQUIPMENTS THAT ARE NEEDED ETC.
Since the above subject is not taught in colleges but arevery impotant for the proper functions of the structures.
Request SEFIANS to come orward and elobrate more on these sinc it is forum where young engineers can learn more.
I request not to view but express your views, share your knowledge with us.

Expansion joint: in concrete work, a gap in the steel and concrete to accomodate, at different times, both expansion and contraction; fibrous material (@1/2″ thick) installed in and around a concrete slab to permit it to move up and down (seasonally) along the non-moving foundation wall. Expansion joints have no rebars crossing the joint except dowel bars bonded with the concretre at one end and debonded at the other.

A Contraction joint provides mainly for shrinkage.

A Construction joint is the one that comes where concreting was stopped one day and completted another day; the conrete on each side is united by rebars crossing the joint.

Control Joint: Tooled, straight grooves made on concrete floors to “control” where the concrete could crack.

Example: A 2 km long concrete pavement may have exp joints every 18 m acrross the length, construction at every 4.5 m acroos the length, and control joints along the length at 4 to 8 m from one another.

Sincerely,

Alok Banerjee<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
