Hello friends,

How do we decide the size of column before calculating the loads on the column?

Is there any thumb rule to calculate the size of column? or we have to do trial and error method?

Thanks,
Ramu.

Dear Er.

Please note that approximate column  size can be  based on the axial loads.
Vide Reynold's HB-page 218  in which it is suggested factors to get  equivalent axial load for column design depending on its orientation i.e location in a frame.
Attached the above for your reference.
