Prof. Mete Sozen -EERIís highest honor-Housner Medal winnerl



Last month, EERI member Mete Sozen, Kettelhut Distinguished Professor of Structural Engineering at Purdue University, was awarded EERIís highest honor, the George W. Housner Medal, in recognition of his seminal research in earthquake-resistant design of reinforced concrete structures, development of seismic provisions of building codes, and leadership on behalf of seismic safety that changed the landscape in earthquake engineering worldwide. His pioneering work on the shear strength of prestressed and
reinforced concrete beams is reflected in the American Concrete Institute Building Code as well as the European Concrete Code. In recent years, he has applied his expertise to explain blast responses in concrete buildings.

Education
He received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Istanbulís Bogazici University. He earned his graduate degrees at the University of Illinois, Urbana, where he joined the faculty in 1957. In 1993, he joined the Purdue faculty.

Research Interests
Development of professional design codes for reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and for earthquake-resistant design of reinforced concrete structures.

It is not surprising that Prof. Mete was chosen as EERIís Distinguished Lecturer in 2002, given his dedication to teaching and his popularity with students.
