Pl.find attached a PDF file on the following topic. It is an interesting article for those want to learn EQ.

A conceptual design approach to manage large earthquake forces
By Yusuf Ate Süleyman Demirel University, Isparta, Turkey.

From the above article it is evident that structures even with regular one analysed and designed using sophisticated software and with high degree of accuracy, detailed as per codes and with good construction practice will be of little use if the followings are present:

1. Wrong ORIENTATION.
2. WRONG CHOICE OF SHAPE.

Thanks Mr Rangarajan Sir for raising such important and little controversial aspect on this forum. really eager to read some response on these matter from SEFI seniors. We can find lots of materials on horizontal Ground motions and response of the structures to such motions But hardly many talks about vertical ground motion. I am  presently living at a place close to the active faults and from experience of earthquake with near source in the  past, i fill we should include the vertical force into seismic design and structure should be designed for combined effect of horizontal and vertical EQ ground motion, but there is no consensus among the designer on this matter.

I have worked a bit on the vertical ground motion effects on structures and collected some useful work carried out around the world on the response of engineering structure to vertical ground motion. Hope this will help in initiation of broader discussion on vertical ground motion.

Regards

Dear Er.Bipin Shrestha,

Thanks for posting your research work and is a good enthusiastic one. I welcome like the above from more from more seniors and experienced engineers.

Dear Rangarajan sir,

As per personal opinion on questions :

When need to consider the Vertical force of EQ ?

Vertical force of EQ
The EQ coefficient in vertical direction = 2/3* Horizontal EQ coeff

Vertical EQ Force is co-existant with Horizontal EQ force
Also, this is +ve as well as -ve, i.e. It must be checked for both
additive and subtractive effects

Ideally speaking a structural member must be checked for this
coexistent force

However vertical EQ has critical effect on cantilevers , Transfer Girders
in buildings . In bridges ,it must be considered for bearings, pile cap, pier
and foundation design and cantilever construction.
Is Equivalent Static method consider the Vertical force of Earthquake?
Yes
Why moment redistribution is not considered in EQ analysis?
Generally structure under Eq condition is designed for a much lower force
than actual EQ and stucture is safe against collapse through DUCTILITY
provisions as result of actal EQ on it during an EQ event
Structure under EQ event has already undergone all sorts of distribution and
redistribution of forces and somehow struggle to survive, thanks to ductile
nature of steel reinforcement provided at proper places under ductile detailing.

Therefore taking relief at structural sections by carrying any redistribution of
EQ moment is just like mirage(water availability delusion) in desert.
Codal stipulations ,too, do not permit it.

If a structure has long span or if the cantilever is more than 5m is worth to
neglect the vertical force of EQ?
Rather it is suicidal to neglect vertical seismic.

best regds

vikramjeet

Dear Er.vikram.jeet,

Thanks for your personal explanations to some of the questions but I need more in depth answers from other seniors.

I will be posting my reply soon.
